We are home to the largest Emergency Department and a Level II Trauma Center.
The Emergency Department has 50 treatment beds. Our large patient lobby has a designated children’s area.
Last year, we treated 77,000 patients at our emergency and trauma center who suffered medical problems or injuries requiring swift and effective treatment.
We follow best practices when prescribing pain medication in our emergency department. You can read our safe pain-prescribing guidelines here.
If you have a non-emergent issue that can’t wait for a regular doctor’s visit, consider our urgent care partner Exer Urgent Care with locations in Pasadena and La Canada.

Specialty Services
We have earned the following specialty center designations. Hospitals are evaluated by the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency (LACO EMS Agency) for specialty center designation.
Paramedic Base Hospital
Huntington Memorial Hospital is one of 20 hospitals in Los Angeles County that serves as a paramedic base hospital.
When medical 9-1-1 is accessed, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics from our local fire departments arrive on scene. Huntington Hospital manages approximately 1,000 base hospital paramedic assessments and contacts per year.
Trauma Center
Huntington Hospital is the only Trauma Center in the San Gabriel Valley. There are specific criteria, outlined by the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services (LACO EMS) Agency, to determine when a patient should be transported to a Trauma Center. Huntington Hospital has a catchment area which extends (approximately) from the 2 and 10 freeways to the edge of Monrovia and the local mountains. As a Trauma Center we have critical surgical intervention available immediately, at any hour of the day, as well as specialized equipment and a specially trained Emergency Department, Surgical and Intensive Care (ICU) and Registered Nurses.
Pediatric Medical Care Center
Huntington Hospital is also the only Pediatric Medical Care Center (PMC) in the San Gabriel Valley. Specialized criteria determine when a pediatric patient in a critical medical state should be transported to a PMC. As a PMC we must have RNs specially trained in critical pediatric care in the Emergency Department and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
ST Elevation Myocardial Infarct (STEMI) Receiving Center
Paramedics are capable of performing electrocardiogram tests (EKG) in the field, which can diagnose a patient having a serious heart attack (aka “STEMI”), and determine their need for immediate intervention in a cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab). In most cases, paramedics can actually transmit the EKG to the Emergency Department physicians at Huntington Hospital. Upon diagnosis, the Emergency Department physician or staff will immediately call an interventional cardiologist and our cath lab team of nurses and technicians.
Our STEMI Receiving Center also provides therapeutic hypothermia for cardiopulmonary arrest patient, a treatment that increases the chance of a patient surviving neurologically intact.
Primary Stroke Center
Paramedics perform a neurological assessment on patients appearing to have signs and symptoms of a stroke. Taking into account the paramedic assessment and the onset of symptoms, the determination can be made to send a patient to a Primary Stroke Center. In our Stroke Center, Huntington Hospital physicians can perform neurological interventions by removing the clot in the brain and providing medications to prevent further brain damage and promote recovery for the stroke patients.
Perinatal Center
Huntington Hospital provides complete obstetrical care for high risk patients and their newborns in a comprehensive Labor and Delivery department complete with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Community Support
It is thanks to our community that our Emergency and Trauma Center is a world-class facility that uses the latest treatments and technology to deliver lifesaving care. Local philanthropists’ generous gifts made the crucial expansion and enhancements possible. Huntington Hospital is deeply grateful for their support, which will make exceptional emergency care available to our region for years to come.
