What is BPH?
Approximately 40 million men in the United States have Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), otherwise known as an enlarged prostate. BPH is a non-cancerous condition where the prostate has grown to be larger than normal. Common in aging men, 1 in 2 men ages 51-60 have BPH. If left untreated, BPH can cause significant health problems, including irreversible bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones, and incontinence. Current BPH surgical treatments often force men to tradeoff between symptom relief and side effects, limiting patients to choose between either a high degree of symptom relief with high rates of irreversible complications such as incontinence, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculatory dysfunction, or a low degree of symptom relief with low rates of irreversible complications.
“BPH is one of the most common conditions affecting men’s health as they age. It’s important that men talk to their physician and/or urologist if they are experiencing changes in urination, such as frequency, urgency, retention and incontinence.”
– Ramin Khalili, MD, medical director of urology, Huntington Health
Aquablation Therapy
“We are proud to be the first hospital in the San Gabriel Valley to offer a solution for men with BPH that provides significant, long-lasting symptom relief with lower risk to their sexual function and continence. Aquablation therapy is the much anticipated next step to furthering our commitment to robotic surgery and men’s health.”
– Armen Dikranian, MD, medical director of robotic surgery, Huntington Health
Using the power of water and ultrasound imaging, Aquablation is a safe and effective treatment for patients suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. This advanced form of therapy, delivered with robotic precision, provides long-lasting symptom relief, no matter how large the patient’s prostate is.
Aquablation therapy is a resective procedure, meaning that the prostate tissue causing symptoms is removed, however, no incision is made. With Aquablation therapy, there are two simple steps:
- Creating a surgical map: Aquablation combines a camera (cystoscope) with real-time ultrasound imaging to view the entire prostate. This enables the surgeon to see the entire prostate so he or she can create a surgical map of the areas of the prostate to remove and those to avoid. In addition, since every prostate is unique in size and shape, the map can be customized and tailored to the patient’s unique anatomy
- Removing the prostate tissue: With the surgical map in place, a robotically controlled, heat-free waterjet removes prostate tissue.
